Paper 1: the algebra & logic paper
Paper 1 is built almost entirely around algebraic manipulation and number-based reasoning: algebraic expressions and equations, patterns and sequences, functions and graphs, finance and growth, and calculus in Grade 12.
If you're strong at 'follow the rules precisely' type maths — solving for x, working through a formula step by step — Paper 1 rewards that skill directly.
Paper 2: the spatial & data paper
Paper 2 tests a different kind of thinking: Euclidean geometry (proofs, angles, circles), analytical geometry (coordinates, gradients, distances), trigonometry, and statistics.
This paper rewards students who can visualise a shape, spot a pattern in a diagram, or reason about a data set — it's less about following a fixed formula and more about seeing the structure of a problem.
What this means for your revision split
If your marks are much lower on one paper than the other, that's not a coincidence — you're probably weaker at one kind of thinking (algebraic vs. spatial/visual), not just one 'chapter'. Once you know which, you can target practice at the actual skill, not just the topic name.
